Spring is here and it’s time to wake your lawn up from its winter slumber. Follow this checklist to set your yard up for a season of healthy, lush growth.
1. Clean Up Debris
Start by removing fallen branches, leaves, and any winter debris from your lawn. This prevents mold and allows sunlight to reach the grass.
2. Assess Damage
Walk your property and look for bare spots, compacted areas, and signs of disease or pest damage from winter.
3. Rake Lightly
A light raking helps remove dead grass (thatch) and promotes air circulation. Don’t rake too aggressively — you don’t want to damage new growth.
4. Test Your Soil
A simple soil test tells you what nutrients your lawn needs. Most grass thrives in slightly acidic soil (pH 6.0-7.0).
5. Aerate Compacted Areas
If your soil is compacted from winter foot traffic or heavy clay, early spring is a great time to aerate. This lets water, air, and nutrients reach the roots.
6. Overseed Thin Spots
Apply grass seed to bare or thin areas. Choose a seed mix that matches your existing lawn and grass type.
7. Apply a Spring Fertilizer
Use a slow-release fertilizer to give your lawn the nutrients it needs for early growth. Avoid over-fertilizing — more isn’t always better.
8. Set Your Mower Height
For the first mow of the season, set your mower slightly lower than usual to remove dead tips. Then raise it to the recommended height for your grass type (usually 3-3.5 inches).
9. Check Your Irrigation
Test sprinklers and hoses before the heat arrives. Fix leaks and adjust sprinkler heads for even coverage.
10. Schedule Regular Mowing
Once growth begins, establish a consistent mowing schedule. Weekly mowing during the growing season keeps your lawn looking its best.
